“Now to the King eternal, immortal, invisible, the only God, be honor and glory for ever and ever. Amen.” — 1 Timothy 1:17

Walter Chalmers Smith was born on December 5, 1824, in Aberdeen, Scotland. He studied theology at Edinburgh. His first ministerial assignment was in London at the Free Scotch Church in Chadwell Street, Islington where he was ordained.

In 1876 he returned to Edinburgh where he pastored Edinburgh Free High Church. Walter wrote poetry and one of his early poems was turned into the hymn “Immortal, Invisible, God Only Wise”.

It is based on the words found in I Timothy 1:17: “Now unto the King eternal, immortal, invisible, the only wise God, be honor and glory forever and ever. Amen.”

It is a praise and worship hymn. It praises our God who is eternal, immortal, invisible and all wise. It is one of those hymns that make one contemplate the greatness of our God.

We need to be still and worship the greatness of Jesus Christ. Today in prayer, praise our Immortal, invisible God.

“Immortal, invisible, God only wise,

In light inaccessible, hid from our eyes,

Most blessed, most glorious, the Ancient of Days,

Almighty, victorious, thy great name we praise.” – Walter C. Smith

God’s Word: “to the only God, our Savior, through Jesus Christ our Lord, be glory, majesty, dominion, and authority, before all time and now and forever. Amen.” – Jude 1:25
