San Diego To Reopen Neighborhood Parks For Limited Use

Neighborhood parks in San Diego are set to partially reopen on Tuesday, a month after the coronavirus pandemic forced their closure.

Mayor Kevin Faulconer said the decision last month to close parks was made after officials observed group gatherings that violated state and local public health orders. But he said since then, San Diegans have acted more responsibly.

"We want to provide, of course, an outlet for people to be physically and mentally active as we grapple with this new normal going forward," he said. "You can go to a neighborhood park, as long as you practice physical distancing. You can participate in individual activities such as walking or jogging. And we strongly recommend, as the county does, that you wear facial coverings."

Parking lots at neighborhood parks, playgrounds and basketball and tennis courts will remain closed, as will beaches, golf courses and regional parks such as Mission Bay Park.

Parts of Balboa Park that act as more community-based parks would be open, the mayor said, but Balboa Park's regional attractions would be closed.
