Hubert “Ted” Lindwall, an International Mission Board missionary emeritus who shared the gospel in Guatemala and Panama, died April 2, 2024. He was 93.
Ted was born Jan. 3, 1931, in Kansas City, Missouri, to the late William and Mildred Lindwall. He graduated from Huntington Beach Union High School, Huntington Beach, California, and received the Bachelor of Arts from Long Beach State College in Long Beach, California, and the Bachelor of Divinity from Golden Gate Baptist Theological Seminary (now Gateway Seminary) in California.
He met Carolyn Sue Francis while serving at a mission in California. He married her on June 27, 1954. Before his appointment as a missionary, he worked as a salesman, teacher, music minister and pastor, among other things across California. When he was young, he traveled to Mexico with his family. There, he was compelled by the great need in Latin America.
In 1960, the Foreign Mission Board (now International Mission Board) appointed Ted and Carolyn missionaries to Guatemala. They later served in Panama. They served for 36 years. Ted and Sue were involved in church planting and theological education and were the first Baptist missionaries to the K’ekchí people of the temperate highlands of Northern Guatemala. Today there are more than 60,000 K’ekchí believers associated with Baptist churches. They retired from IMB in their 70s.
Ted and Sue were married for 58 years before she passed away in 2012. After he moved back to the U.S., he established a ministry called Church on the March. Through it, he carried out programs in Guatemala and Nicaragua focused on providing Bible lessons to children in public schools. Into his 90s, he traveled to Guatemala.
His family shared in his obituary, “Ted had no greater joy than to serve the Lord during his 93 years of life, and in the final days before his passing he told all his visitors that he was ready for eternity.”
Ted was preceded in death by his wife, Sue, and two sons: David Allen (who died shortly after birth), and Timothy (who died in 1990).
He is survived by his son, David Erik.
